The Rwandan government is set to grant Mount Kenya university Kigali campus, a charter to operate as a full-fledged national private institution.

The move is said to be a blessing to students, who have been travelling all the way to Thika town in Kenya where the main campus is located for their graduation.

Dr Emmanuel Mwunyi who is the Higher Education Council’s, (HEC) executive director said that, reference is made to the assessment that was conducted by a team constituted by the HEC, to asses whether MKU Kigali was ready to change it’s status to the proposed Mount Kenya International University of Technology.

He further asked MKU Rwanda vice chancellor Prof. Edwin Odhuno to make necessary adjustments to fast track the transition of the Campus to it’s new status.

Professor Simon Gicharu, the founder of the university said, the move had been made necessary by the need to overcome cross-border challenges in running the institution.

Prof Gicharu further added that since the number of students which is now at 600 is growing fast, it would be better to make Mku Rwanda autonomous to serve them better. He also acknowledged the efforts of President Paul Kagame’s government in supporting the move .

The news of the approval was announced by the Director general of the Rwanda utility regulatory Authority Patrick Nyirishema who was the chief guest at a ceremony to launch Royal FM, which is an English broadcasting radio station in Kigali at the MKU grounds. The event was also attended by powerful government officials including the Kenyan High Commissioner John Mugendi.

In Nyirishema’s speech, he said “Today and before coming here, a decision was taken granting MKU a national private University status in Rwanda.”

He also praised the opening of the radio station noting that it would help address unemployment among the youth. Royal FM which is a commercial radio station is operated by the MKU’s school of communication.
