Scam Alert; Don’t Call Back Foreign NumbersWhich ‘Flash’ You

Written by on January 6, 2018

Have you been getting calls from foreign phone numbers where your phone is ‘flashed’ for a few seconds?…quite afew Kenyans have been getting such calls in the past few weeks (including us!) and Safaricom is warning customers against returning calls to these numbers.

The Wangiri Scam

Apparently, the whole thing is a scam that’s happening all over the world. According to the Irish Times, “The Wangiri Fraud sees scam artists use phone numbers bought on the dark web (where criminals trade in illegal goods and services) to dial phone users in other countries and then immediately disconnect the calls to them.”

“The aim of the scam is to encourage those who see a missed call on their phone to call the number where they are re-routed to premium rate numbers overseas where their number is subsequently billed for the privilege of listening to pre-recorded messages.”
