University of Eldoret, Egerton University and Kabianga University are some of the institutions the Auditor-General Edward Ouko raised concern on, over increasing debts. During his report, the auditor general said that these institutions have been unable to raise money left as debts by former students.

This has raised a great concern that some public universities are allowing students to graduate without clearing their fee arrears which is adding up to hundreds of millions leaving the colleges with large debts. Egerton university which has been rumored to close most of its branch campuses including Nairobi campus causing discomfort among students stands out with the highest debt amounting to Ksh581 million.

Mr Ouko said that the debt is alarming and a demonstration of the inefficient system in the universities of student debt management. This follows a month later after HELB declared war on HELB loan defaulters raising eyebrows on how well student debt is being handled especially in public universities.
