The Education CS, Dr Fred Matiang’i has instructed vice chancellors of public universities to hold salaries of striking lecturers, setting the stage for a new confrontation between the staff and the institutions.
In a letter dated March 3, the CS wrote he’s in support of the disciplinary action against the striking lecturers including withholding the February salary.
“The union should not withhold labour while taking part in negotiations.” said the letter.
The UoN Deputy VC, Prof. Isaac Mbeche, has written to lecturers, saying only lecturers who worked will be paid. Off the 33 universities, only 3 have paid their lecturers.
UASU secretary general, Dr Constantine Wasonga has criticised the CS directive saying the strike will continue until an agreement is negotiated, signed, registered and implemented.
