Vice-chancellors of top public universities will earn more than their colleagues at the recently chartered higher education institutions under new guidelines by Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Those working in institutions such as the University of Nairobi, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Moi University, Egerton University, Kenyatta and Maseno will take home a bigger salary.
For instance vice-chancellors of the top universities have been graded at E5 while others have been graded at E4.
Deputy vice-chancellor at Moi University is in Grade E4 while a Multimedia University counterpart is graded E3.
Vice-chancellors have held a meeting with the SRC while Universities Academic Staff Union has protested the grading and moved to court where it obtained orders that their participation is sought in the development of the new grading system.
Vice-chancellors Committee chairman Francis Aduol said: “We met SRC on Monday and we will continue to hold discussions with them.”
Prof Aduol Tuesday said the job evaluation report had raised interest amongst the staff across various public universities.
Already several public universities are struggling to replace retiring lecturers who hold PhDs.
A report by the commission indicates that for the last one year, close to 6,000 students enrolled in universities for PhDs, but only 369 graduated.
Kenya has less than 10,000 PhD holders and requires 1,000 PhDs per year in order to narrow the student to lecturer ratio.
