Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili aka Babu Owino has told Education CS Fred Matiangi that closing the University of Nairobi after the demonstrations is not a solution.
“Matiang’i has ordered university senate to close The University of Nairobi indefinitely. This is not the solution but postponing the problem. Revolution in many countries in the world started from the universities. Comrades power is second after the Holy Spirit power,” he posted on his Facebook page.
The University of Nairobi (UoN) was closed on Tuesday morning 3 October with immediate effect due to the deteriorating security situation in the university, according to the institution’s Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi.
The institution’s Director of Corporate Affairs, John Orindi, said that the students had been given until 9.00 am to leave the university premises. This follows after the students protested over the arrest of former student President Babu Owino after his remarks against the presidency.
The university students also demanded that the institution’s Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi get fired alleging that he allowed the police officers into the varsity premises.
The police officers have been criticized by Kenyans after leaked photos and videos of them brutally beating the students went viral on social media.
