A message being circulated through WhatsApp regarding the Government fee subsidy for students applying for courses in National Polytechnics and Technical Training Institutes through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
While the message, which did not originate from KUCCPS, indicates that there will be Government capitation and Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loan for students enrolled in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions during the current application period, it contains inaccurate information.
The Placement Service therefore wishes to set out the correct position as follows:
- Beginning July 1, 2018, the Government will reduce tuition fee for students joining National Polytechnics and Technical Training Institutes by sending capitation grants to the institutions for every student admitted.
- In addition, HELB will provide loans to the students. Part of the loan will be forwarded directly to the training institution to cater for tuition, while the other part will be sent to the beneficiary student’s bank account for upkeep.
- The amounts will be announced by the relevant Government office.
- The funding will only be for students who enroll in National Polytechnics and Technical Training Institutes through the KUCCPS.
The above measures are meant to make Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) more accessible to the Kenyan youths searching skills for employment or self-employment.
Past KCSE candidates who qualify for TVET courses who are yet to join college are therefore encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and apply to join National Polytechnics or Technical Training Institutes of their choice through the KUCCPS website www.kuccps.ac.ke.
