Credit Reference Bureaus has warned that the attempts by the University of Nairobi to forward names of defaulting students will be opposed.
More than 500 graduates who had studied under the self-sponsored programme and have not paid fee arrears amounting to more than 200 million, thus prompting the university to warn that they would submit their names to the Credit Reference Bureaus.
Deputy vice-chancellor Isaac Mbeche said those who fail to pay would have their names published in newspapers together with the amount they owe the university.
“If they do not respond again, we will now refer them to credit reference bureau for action,” said Prof Mbeche as he asked those affected to pay for the services that the university rendered to them.
However, CRB consider that the application by the University of Nairobi to submit the names will not be accepted because its core business is not the provision of goods and services on credit.
This move comes after the University goes through a cash crisis following a reduction in students enrollment
The University will need to apply to the Central Bank of Kenya through the credit bureaus the list of fee defaulters.
