I know with this I’m gonna disagree with many Kenyans, especially Slayqueens because they have taken it as part of their dressing code.
I know I’m going to be in disagreement with the Kenyan government because makeups are one of the high revenue generators in the country at the moment, the government is only busy with the tax they impose on its subjects but not the products they tax.
More than 80% of the population of the Kenyan ladies and women use lipsticks and makeups.
But we also have to acknowledge the side effects of this products. Lipsticks have long term side effects on and in our body organs.
The lipstick pigment contains harsh chemicals that irritate the skin and leads to blackening of lips and can also cause leucoderma due to melanocyte destruction.
A research which was done by the FDA and California University also found that lipsticks contain toxic preservatives and heavy metals like:
- Lead (Neurotoxin)
- Cadmium (Carcinogen)
- Chromium
- Manganese
- Aluminium
- Parabens.
We can always ingest this compounds accidentally or they can leach through pores on our lips (Boychild during kissing).Lead can cause heart diseases, high blood pressure and heart rate variability.
Lead can also reduce brain function and affect the nervous system. It might, thus, result in memory and concentration problems. In fact, extreme lead poisoning has been known to cause epilepsy, loss of consciousness, and even death.
In 2007, a study by the campaigns for safe Cosmetics tested 33 varieties of lipsticks for lead contamination, 20 of these tested positive for lead in variable amounts, there is no amount of lead which can be measured safe for our bodies.
In 2013 the FDA also conducted a test of lead on lipsticks and the lead containment was ranging between 0.026 ppm to 7.19 ppm.
Cadmium and Chromium can Cause Cancer.
Cadmium is a known Carcinogen that has been linked with lung cancer and damage to the respiratory system.
Around 50% of Lipstick items contain cadmium, and cadmium is also a substance which contributes to the formation of cancer, it had ever been found in breast cancer tissue, cancer cells use cadmium to multiply.
Chromium is also a Carcinogen and it is linked to lung cancer and stomach tumours.
The following brands of lipsticks had been considered not safe for use:
- Avon Beyond Color in Mad for Mauve (#558)
- Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer in Toffee
- CoverGirl Continuous Color in Warm Brick (#025)
- CoverGirl Queen Collection Vibrant Hues in Ruby Remix (#580)
- L’Oreal Colour Riche in Volcanic (#410)
- L’Oreal Endless in Mauve Amour(#530)
- L’Oreal Colour Riche in Tickled Pink (#165)
- L’Oreal Intensely Moisturizing Lipcolor in Heroic (#748)
- Maybelline Color Sensational in Pink Petal (#125)
- Maybelline Color Sensation in Mauve Me
We don’t know the amount of containment of this compounds on the lipsticks sold in Kenya because they have never published a report on the same, but my concern is, if we can import a contaminated sugar, what do you think can happen to the brands of lipsticks being sold in our local markets?
The boychild has been suffering from this in one way or another more so during the kissing process.
I, therefore, call upon the KEBS to conduct an investigation on this.
