JKUAT’s College of Engineering and Technology (COETEC) in collaboration with the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) staged a career talk aimed at sensitizing and preparing the college students for an effective shift from the classroom to the industry.
Eng. Godfrey Marambe, IEK Capacity Building and Mentorship Committee member, counselled the students to embrace patience and be relentless in their undertaking as engineering is a slow gratification profession. He further urged the students to build meaningful networks with mentors for smooth transition from college to their preferred career paths.
Principal, COETEC, Dr. Eng. Hiram Ndiritu, said the forum provides a common ground where final year students and other students meet professionals in the job market with a view to sensitize and mold them and demystify engineering as a profession.
He acknowledged that there was a lot to be done to encourage and prepare students for the job market adding that the forum provided vital information that ensured JKUAT students were ahead of their peers in terms of identifying valuable job opportunity gaps in the country.
While urging the students to foster high levels of integrity, Mary Abungu, an intern at the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK), called upon them to build on their soft skills especially communication skills, time and resource management. She attested that these skills are paramount in ensuring they thrive in the job market.
Maureen Jemutai, a 3rd year Electrical and Electronic Engineering student was appreciative of the career talk saying, the forum had impacted her positively, equipping her with requisite information and skills essential for soft landing after her studies.
